Reaching Out With Puppets

by Carol Sterling

As a new art teacher, Carol started using puppets to supplement the school curriculum, but had little idea how much it could deepen children’s knowledge or enrich their lives. Then as time went on, teachers began to come to her with both their curriculum tales of woe and behavioral concerns. Carol had an idea. She began helping children create puppets while finding ways to use them not just to enrich their classroom curriculum, but also to help them solve conflicts and personal problems.

As word spread about the success of her programs, Carol received a United States Fulbright Specialist Award to work in several other countries as an educational puppeteer.

Other Fulbright  Scholarships followed, enabling Carol to work with classrooms in many other countries including Germany and India, and to lead teacher workshops in countries as diverse as the US, UK, Canada, China, Japan, Israel, Germany, Spain, Vietnam, Thailand.
