Inspiring Story of the Week: Serendipity

by Steve Walker

It all started with a photograph and a postcard.

While wandering about in a quaint little town on the north shore of LI, NY, Steve spotted a postcard in a drug store window. The photo displayed on front of that postcard grabbed his attention. You see the harbor, which normally was packed with boats, was pictured with only a few boats, all sailing in a circle.

Steve purchased the postcard with the thought of creating a charcoal drawing of this scene. But if he was to publish and display it, it seemed only right to give the photographer inspirational credit for this picture. With that thought in mind, and only a few days remaining until his first art show, he returned to the drug store where he had first purchased that postcard. That’s when he learned that the photographer who captured that harbor scene had recently died, but that his wife was happy to grant Steve permission to display his charcoal drawing.

Steve invited her to join him at the art show, where he gave her a print of his charcoal drawing of that original postcard scene. But something else happened when the two met, leading to a serendipitous moment with unexpected,  far reaching benefits to the surrounding community in which they both lived.
