My Love Affair With Alan Alda

Okay, my secret is out at last. I’ve had a long standing love affair with Alan Alda. The truth is, I only followed him from afar at first, initially being smitten by his Hawkeye Pierce performance in the popular television series, M*A*S*H. My secret affair was subtle at first, more like a school girl crush back then. But in retrospect, I realized that despite the blatant humor in that series, I was gradually beginning to recognize something else. That something was my suspicion that some deeper messages were lurking behind the laughter, just waiting to be discovered.
As time went on, Alan Alda began to show his stuff to me, but I know I wasn’t alone. He took on roles that awakened many of us to living life to its fullest, as those Emmy and Golden Globe Awards kept rolling in. But please don’t get me wrong. it wasn’t so much all those awards that impressed me. It was his underlying commitment to values I appreciated. And then one day I read something he had written that clearly spoke to me. I typed it up, framed it, and for the past fifteen years or so, it has hung on my office wall.
